Barcelo Puerta Plata, Playa Dorada, Dominican Republic

Relaxation is the name of the game at Barcelo Puerta Plata. A gorgeous, spacious hotel set in tropical gardens makes chilling out easy. You can grab a sun lounger by one of the pools or even Playa Dorada’s golden, sandy beach and tuck into your holiday read. But if you do want to step it up a gear at Barcelo Puerta Plata there’s a bundle of activities day and night to keep the whole family happy.

Mr Raymond Jack review (11/12/2010)

My wife and I have been to Dominican Republic 4 times now. once to Punta Cana and 3 times to Puerto Plata. you only have to say no thanks to the porters at the airports and they won't take your cases. As for your cases being robbed at the airport it is a fact of life some cases get robbed at every airport in the world including British airports that you landed at. As for the hotel Barcelo we have never stayed at it, but we've stayed at the Bluebay next door and used the same beach area. Tipping is down choice if you wish to but for touting for tips ? I have my doubts. They are are freindly people and their job is to ensure you are being looked after so there attention can be a little too much, there will always be someone who has a bad experience but the Dominican Republic is a great holiday destination for all.

On arriving in the Dominican we were met by customs asking if we had and pound coins for them, quite aggressively. The porters then grabbed our bags and walked around 50 yards to the bus and then demanded 1$ per bag, at the Barcelo Plata hotel it was constant touting for tips, from morning to night. Then to cap it all our cases were robbed at the airport on the way home! This is a poor country that relies on tourism to bring money in, I understand that we should tip for good service but this was beyond a joke. We will not be going back.
